GA Deputy Shot, Critically Wounded in Gunfight with Homeless Subject

A Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and critically wounded Saturday morning in Augusta.

Dep. Kenneth Mercer was shot in the neck. As of Sunday he remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.

Deputies responded shortly before noon to a report of a subject with a gun.

During the investigation Deputy Mercer and the subject were shot. The subject, who was reportedly homeless, was killed, WJBF reports.

In a news release, Sunday morning, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation stated that when RCSO deputies responded they learned that the subject had been pointing a gun at people in the area earlier that day.
