Patient Shoots Officer in South Carolina Hospital

An officer with the Greenville Health Authority Police Department confronted the man, and the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer. The officer returned fire.

An officer and gunman were injured during an exchange of gunfire at the Laurens County Hospital in South Carolina, reports the State.

It happened just before 2 a.m. Thursday, when a man with a gun walked into Prisma Health Laurens County Memorial Hospital, according to Thom Berry, spokesman for the State Law Enforcement Division.

An officer with the Greenville Health Authority Police Department confronted the man, who was in the hospital for some type of treatment, Berry said. During this confrontation, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the officer.

The officer returned fire, hitting the suspect, Berry said.

Both were undergoing treatment Thursday morning, but there was no word on their conditions, Berry said.
